Book review:
Take a big-city boy, throw in a small town, a mystery, and a little romance, and what do you get? Well, in this case, a touching feel-good novel.
This is one of those books that people read not for the sake of literary prowess or academic merit, but rather because it's engaging, it's thoughtful, and it's simply a joy to read.
It's easy to be caught up in this "coming home" story, because it's well written and the characters are carefully crafted. This book doesn't make the mistake of creating "too perfect" characters, and the result is that you empathize with them as they suffer hardships, whether brought on by others or themselves.
The aspect that really keeps the pages turning is the mystery. A search for an unknown woman brings Will, our main character, closer to his late grandfather while confusing him and causing him to question the reality he's assumed.
The story is handled with delicacy and balance, which are welcome in a story which could have been treated too lightly.
The book does come off a little "fluffy" at times, but the ending has depth and clarity of message which pulls the book together marvelously.

I'm doing some illustrations for Collegiate Quarterly, a study guide my church puts out for college-age folks. I've never done illustrations before so it's kind of a new experience. Only two or three more to go. I'm drawing them by hand with a lovely pen and then scanning them in my computer and modifying them a little in Corel Photo-Paint. Kind of fun, just wish (as usual) that I had started a little earlier. :o)

Book review:
Continuing in the tradition of her previous books, Joan Bauer graces us with another strong, independent heroine with an unusual passion.
Jenna sells shoes, and she does it well. When the owner of the shoe-store chain recruits her to drive from Chicago to Dallas, Jenna is torn. She has plenty of problems she'd like to get away from but she also has concerns about leaving her family for the summer.
The most striking thing about this book is how Jenna comes to understand the relationship between trials and character. Though this is somewhat a feel-good novel, it doesn't shy away from serious problems and heavy topics. It also deals well with the fact that, in real life, things do not always turn out how we want them too but that doesn't absolve us of personal responsibility.
Together with the themes mentioned above, the writing is engrossing and the result is a very insightful book which is a pleasure to read.

We just went bowling at Westy's Garden Lanes with Juli and Todd. I scored 108 in my best game coz I rock. (Ha ha.) I also bought a pair of shoes which is exciting to me because I've wanted them for a while and also because it's been about a year since I got new shoes. Woo hoo.

I actually drank my 64 oz. of water today. I probably have done it before but this is the first time I actually counted. I filled a 2 liter pop bottle with my nice filtered water and drank it in glassfuls all day, and now I've met the quota. Horray for me!

Fun weekend! I sang for a nice Friday night vespers, and Saturday night we went to a bonfire. Biggest one I've ever seen, in fact (well, at least in person). It was a great social event, I got to eat lots of yummy food and talk to some very interesting people.
I heard a bit more about Tom's time in Romania. Tom is our new assistant pastor (well, he moved here only about one week after we did) and about our age. He also lives in the same apartment complex as we do, so I expect we'll become better friends as time goes on.
Earlier on Sabbath, I got conned into throwing a football with my husband. This is because some of us from church are going to start getting together and playing an informal game on Sunday mornings. Daniel reminds me that football is an all-weather sport, which is a relevant thought as it gets colder here. Now I'm sore from tossing the football and from playing racquetball last night (it didn't really help that I hit the ball against the back wall and it promptly flew right back at my head).
Hoping the week will be as nice...

Okay, I haven't ever really considered myself a social reject. So whatever. But I felt particularly non-reject-ish this weekend because on Sabbath, my d.h. and I got involved with both a picnic and a (short) camping trip. The picnic was haystacks and burritos at Barber Park, which was warm and filled with bees, but enjoyable at that.
Camping was at Pine Flat Hot Springs near Lowman, Idaho. As the name indicates, there was indeed a hot springs. Had loads of fun and am planning on camping a lot more next year.
Experimenting with blogger.com at the moment, we'll see what comes of it...
